Certificate in Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL)
is a course for both in-service and pre-service teachers who want to enhance their teaching strategies via knowlege and practice. The course consists of input sessions and teaching practices. In the input sessions, trainees understand how teach the five English Systems (Grammar, Function, Lexis, Discourse & Phonology) and the four English Skills (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking). They also get introduced to basic ideas in ELT such as grouping, interaction forms, student-centredness, etc. During the course students are asked to perform what they have learnt through teaching practice and they need to teach five times. For each teaching practice, trainees submit a professional lesson plan that is part of their assessment. In order for trainees to succeed, they need at least to pass two teaching practices (TPs): one in teaching skills and the other in teaching systems.
