Module Overview

TKT Module Two explores how English language teachers turn a learning aim into a lesson. It begins with three practical questions. What should learners be able to do by the end? Which activities will help them get there? How will the teacher know they have succeeded? These questions guide the planning of both individual lessons and a sequence of lessons that build on one another.

Setting Aims and Planning Activities

Candidates learn to distinguish the main aim of a lesson from its supporting aims and the teacher’s own development goals. They consider what learners already know, which difficulties might arise, how much time each activity needs, and when learners should work individually, in pairs, or as a class. For example, in a lesson on asking for directions, learners might listen to a short exchange, practise useful questions, and then follow a partner’s directions on a map. Whether they reach the intended destination helps the teacher judge how well they understood the exchange.

Choosing and Adapting Teaching Resources

Candidates explore how dictionaries and grammar guides can help teachers prepare lessons. They also learn to select and adapt coursebook exercises, supplementary materials, and teaching aids to suit their learners. In the directions lesson, for example, the teacher might choose a local map and give each partner a version with different landmarks missing. Each learner then has a reason to ask questions and listen carefully to the answers.

Test Format

The test contains 80 matching and multiple-choice questions. The first 40 cover planning and preparing lessons. The remaining 40 focus on selecting and using resources for language teaching.
