Exploring Brno: Unforgettable Memories from the International Language Symposium

In 2017, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the picturesque city of Brno in the Czech Republic, where I presented a workshop at the International Language Symposium Brno. As a teacher trainer, this experience was both professionally enriching and personally unforgettable.

Discovering the Beauty and History of Brno: Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, captivated me from the moment I arrived. Its cobblestone streets, elegant architecture, and charming squares exuded an old-world charm that felt like stepping back in time. The city's rich history, dating back centuries, was palpable in every corner, from the majestic Špilberk Castle overlooking the city to the iconic Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.

The International Language Symposium Brno: My visit to Brno coincided with the International Language Symposium, an esteemed gathering of language educators from around the world. It was an honour to be among such passionate professionals dedicated to advancing language education and sharing innovative teaching practices.

Dictation Not Dictatorship Workshop: During the symposium, I had the privilege of presenting a workshop titled "Dictation Not Dictatorship." The session aimed to explore modern dictation strategies that prioritise student-centred learning and engagement. Rather than traditional dictation methods that can feel authoritarian and passive, I emphasised the importance of incorporating interactive and enjoyable dictation activities that empower students and enhance their language skills.

Exploring Student-Centred Dictation Strategies: Throughout the workshop, we delved into various techniques and resources for creating dynamic dictation exercises. From incorporating multimedia elements like audio clips and videos to designing collaborative dictation tasks that encourage peer interaction, the session highlighted innovative approaches to make dictation more interactive and meaningful for students. By embracing these student-centred strategies, educators can transform dictation sessions into engaging learning experiences that promote active participation and foster language acquisition.

Fond Memories and Lasting Impact: Reflecting on my time in Brno and the International Language Symposium, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to connect with fellow educators and share insights into student-centred teaching practices. The beauty of Brno, combined with the warmth and enthusiasm of its residents, left an indelible mark on me. My workshop experience reinforced my commitment to innovative and student-focused teaching methods, inspiring me to continue exploring new approaches to language education.

Visiting Brno and participating in the International Language Symposium was truly a highlight of my career as a teacher trainer. The memories of this enriching experience will continue to inspire and shape my teaching philosophy for years to come.
